Father's Day My Dad and I took a father-son trip to NY in 1971. Beyond just having quality time together, my Dad had an objective on that trip. The objective was showing me, a spoiled kid from private school and wealthy neighborhoods with security gates, what his very different life was like as a kid.
Seeing PS 37, The Bronx High School of Science, Hunter College and the streets where he grew up was really a bit of a shock.
I remember seeing a kid my age shining shoes on a street corner to make a dollar. It took many years for me to realize the importance of that trip. That trip is not lost on me now however nor in what I have tried to instill in my own children.
I'm grateful to have had him as a father.
Happy Father's Day everybody.
All the best.
