DARIN & DEE - PERFECT MARRIAGE

This article appeared in the May, 1963 issue of
Song Hits Magazine.

Sandra and Bobby are currently starring in If a Man Answers. Bobby plays a hard-to-get photographer, and he offers Sandra a job, modeling in a bikini for calendar art. Her father is outraged at her skimpy attire and whisks her away from Bobby. But, as in their real life romance, love wins out.

At first glance it looks like a press agent's dream ...

Sandra Dee, darling of the fans, a beautiful, publicity-seeking young girl whose only dream and driving ambition was to become a star.

Bobby Darin, who catapulted to fame with one hit record, "Mack the Knife," which has since become a recording industry classic. A cocky, conceited young man whose sole ambition a few short years ago was to become a living legend before he reached 25.

Yet, from this unlikely liaison has emerged a marriage that even jaded and disillusioned Hollywood is convinced was made in Heaven. What are these two people really like, and how has marriage changed them?

Bobby has softened considerably, become a kinder, and more gentle person. He has brought to the marriage a strength of character and a strong sense of identity. Perhaps because she lacks these qualities, Sandra loves him all the more for having these attributes. He, in turn is grateful for her warmth, her capacity for love, and her earnest desire to be a good wife.

"Because I have a career, I work twice as hard at being a wife. You have to stay appealing and feminine and put your husband before anything else. I've only been married a little while and I'm still used to thinking in terms of ME coming first. I sometimes forget that now its WE or US."

When the Darins announced an anticipated blessed event, all Hollywood wondered: "Does she really want this baby?" After all, she was so young -- just 19 she'd only been married a few months, and her career was going full-blast.

Sandy and Bobby themselves appeared delighted. They spoke in glowing terms of the baby and their plans for the future. Sandy was convinced in the beginning that it would be a boy, and had the nursery decorated in blue and white months before the baby was expected.

The entire film colony and recording industry rejoiced when Dodd Mitchell was born on December 16, 1961, and Hollywood's doubts were quickly dispelled. Sandy took to motherhood like a duck to water, and Bobby promptly became the coo-ingest, gurglingest father in Hollywood. Sandra insists Bobby was born to be a father. He is marvelous with Dodd, and they mutually adore each other. Sandra and Bobby are both crazy about children, and Bobby has often said he wants a big family.

What has motherhood done to Sandra? It's more a question of what motherhood has done for her. Today she is slim as a reed, and even the harshest admit she is a thousand times lovelier than before the birth of her baby.

There is no question, say her closest friends, that her marriage is far more important to her than her career. She plans an occasional movie such as the recent If a Man Answers, and it would be a shame if she didn't. She has a lot of talent and she is very young, with her most artistically productive years still before her.
