Bobby Darin

"After Today"

A tribute to Bobby Darin on December 20, 2009
By Kanna Jones

Only four nights before Christmas,
the town was filled with vigor.

No one knew there was a man
in a small room in a hospital,
facing his fate, searching his soul.

No one knew that there was he,
he who desperately wanted to live,
he who had to outgrow to reach his dream.

His frail body was exhausted.
It demanded to evade its pain

His mind floated in the room
seeking where it could earn relief.

Wished to remember how he took care.
Wished to return when he had no fear.

Wanted to know that he was loved.
Wanted to tell that he loved them back.

"Did they really know?"

At last, he picked up the phone
calling home that always had answers.

After the day
we only have his songs.

After the day
we only have his smile.

We learned to live with his smile
longer than he lived,
and longer than we would live.

At last, he picked up the phone,
calling home that always had answers.

"After today ...," said he.

We learned to live with laughter to stay.
