AKA: Suggestions for Spacey Fans who want to know more about Bobby

I have been asked by the kind dedicated web editor of the popular Kevin Spacey fan site Driving Mr. Spacey to offer some tips to Kevin's fans who do not know a lot about Bobby Darin (the subject of Mr. Spacey's next film). I hope this page is useful to them. I got together with fellow fan & the Darin Archivist Jimmy Scalia and we came up with this list of suggestions.

Information on Bobby's Life

Books

There were four books written about Bobby in the past. These are:

Borrowed Time: The 37 Years of Bobby Darin by Al Diorio,Published by Running Press in March 1981

"That's All: Bobby Darin on Record, Stage and Screen" by Jeff Bleiel, Published by Popular Culture Ink in November 1993

Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee by Dodd Darin( Bobby's son), Published by Warner Books in September 1994

A new book "Me and Bobby D: A Memoir" by Steve Karmen, a close friend of Bobby's. Published by Hal Leonard in March 2003.

Of the four above, all are GREAT, each special in their own way, but the first three appear to be out of print and hard to find, but you can try Amazon.com or ebay.com to find used copies, or your local library may have them.

Online Options

Online, you could check out the Section on Bobby's life on this site. You could read this sites short bio about Bobby , for career highlights. To see what made Bobby tick, you could browse the magazine article section on the site.

Video & TV

If you want a good video documentary "Beyond The Song" is an excellent option. (This video appears to be out of print,contact Darin Archivist Jimmy for that.) Bobby was also the subject of an A&E Biography which was included in The Songmakers Collection DVD & Video which appears to be unavailable at the moment at Amazon.com. CD Universe appears to have it. ( Here is Cd Universes Video list of Bobby's work.) Bobby's A&E BIO often appears on A&E and The Biography channel. The same goes with Bobby's "Mysteries & Scandals" which pops up on E! Television from time to time. ( Bobby's current Tv schedule can be found here at Tv-now.com.

Movies

Bobby made many movies, he was an outstanding dramatic actor and comedian. Check out the movie section on this site. It will tell you what is available. You can also check out this page for collectors items. Its hard to pinpoint a favorite here, HE WAS GOOD AT EVERYTHING !

Sometimes Bobby's films appear on TV. They seem to go in cycles. Right now ( March 2003), "Hell Is For Heroes" and "State Fair" are on the most, but "Pressure Point" ( 1962), "Captain Newman MD", "Come September" and "The Happy Ending" have been on television recently too. (Some of these are on video, again check out this page.)

Concert Footage

Highly recomended is "The Mack Is Back" video or DVD , which is Bobby's last filmed performance in 1973. ( We recommend the DVD because it has much more footage). You can also buy" The Darin Invasion", which was recorded in 1970 and features the song "Hi-De-Ho", song Kevin has sung publicly Darin-style....to be continued.....
